Toni Servillo will be the protagonist of “The return of Casanova”
Toni Servillo will be the protagonist of “The Return of Casanova“, the next film directed by Oscar winner Gabriele Salvatores. Loosely based on the Austrian short story of the same name by Arthur Schnitzler, it will tell what happens to a great lover when he gets older. Taking a cue from Schnitzler’s style, Salvatores intends to tell two stories in parallel. On the one hand, that of Casanova struggling with Marcolina, described by the director to Variety as a “proto-feminist”. Due to a gambling debt, the woman ends up in bed with Casanova, which prompts Lorenzi, Marcolina’s lover, to challenge Casanova to a duel. On the other hand, it will tell the story of a director now over sixty, played by Servillo, who, during the filming of his own film based on The Return of Casanova, falls in love and gets pregnant a woman much younger than him “who has nothing to do with the world of cinema “.
Salvatores wrote the screenplay for the film with Umberto Contarello (The Great Beauty, The New Pope) and Sara Mosetti (All my crazy love). The Oscar-winning director said he intends to shoot the second part in black and white, while the 18th century section with Casanova will be in color. Filming on The Return of Casanova, which will have a budget of € 7 million, will begin in Venice in September.
