Gucci ‘plunders’ Balenciaga for 100th birthday collection
The presentation named Aria included men’s and women’s wear and begins with a male model disappearing through the doors of a mocked-up “Savoy Club”, and marching down a corridor catwalk, lined with hundreds of flashing cameras.
Creative director Alessandro Michele, who has been at the helm of Gucci since 2015, looked back at the brand’s heritage to celebrate the milestone.The brand’s founder, Guccio Gucci, worked as bellboy at The Savoy hotel in London in the 1890s after leaving his hometown of Milan.
Logos are emblazoned across tailoring and dresses, in the form of Balenciaga’s diagonal style, while Gucci’s traditional interlocking Gs feature throughout the collection.In an old-style runway show with paparazzi flashbulbs blazing, the designer pushed forth a more commercial, tailored, equestrian-tinged, ’90s and early Aughts-reminiscent image for next season.
