Director Steven Spielberg tackles a monument of American cinema by offering his own version of the musical film West Side Story, which itself took over the work of Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents. Which in turn found its inspiration in Shakespeare …First performed on September 26, 1957 at the Winter Garden Theater on Broadway, the musical drama West Side Story has become a little more inscribed in American cultural history with its film adaptation, entrusted to Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins in 1961 .The original libretto of the play was of course inspired by Romeo and Juliet and its motif of impossible love because of enemy families, all transposed to the United States of the 1950s … As such, Spielberg retains, it is note, this temporal context.
